Existing Site Conditions
The site featured a challenging slope with poor drainage, resulting in water accumulation and limited usable space.

The homeowners approached Roots & Petals to transform their backyard, a challenging site with steep slopes, poor drainage, and ongoing soil erosion that left the space unappealing and non-functional. A detailed analysis showed storm water was collecting on the property and overflowing into the neighboring yard. After presenting several designs and refining a final direction with input from the HOA, we began with site clearing and shrub removal, installed a comprehensive drainage system, constructed a flagstone patio, built retaining walls to stabilize the slopes, and finished with topsoil and turf. The result is a beautiful, functional lawn that can be enjoyed year-round.
The build, step by step

The site featured a challenging slope with poor drainage, resulting in water accumulation and limited usable space.

Overgrown shrubs were carefully removed to improve access to the basement and prepare the site for redevelopment.

A comprehensive French drainage system was installed to effectively manage storm water flow and prevent future water logging.

Patio spaces were created and finished with natural flagstone, providing durable and inviting outdoor areas.

Retaining walls were constructed and the land carefully graded to stabilize the slope and create level, functional space. Approximately 3 tons of filtered fill soil were added to improve the terrain, followed by topsoil and turf installation to establish a healthy lawn.

The transformed landscape now offers a practical and beautiful outdoor environment for both homeowners and their pets. Accessible patios and thoughtfully designed spaces provide year-round enjoyment while successfully resolving longstanding site challenges.
A tree stump at the entry point disrupted access and created a visual obstruction for the condominium. After discussing several hardscape options with the homeowner, a final proposal of stump removal followed by a redesigned path was finalized. The intervention began with stump removal, followed by the installation of a thoughtfully designed pathway that improved access while enhancing the overall entry experience.

Designed as a peaceful mountain retreat in Mussoorie, this resort embraces the site's natural contours to create an immersive stay experience. The proposed design features a mix of single and double-storey cottages, recreational spaces, event areas, and thoughtfully placed seating, all surrounded by native plant species.

The homeowners wanted to enrich their existing gardens with native planting. A vibrant palette of native perennials was introduced across several properties, transforming each space into a thriving refuge for pollinators.
